What is shingles?

Shingles (herpes zoster) is caused by the varicella zoster virus — the same virus that causes chickenpox. After a previous chickenpox infection, the virus can remain dormant and reactivate later in life, causing a painful rash and, in some people, long-term nerve pain (postherpetic neuralgia).

Who is most at risk

  • Older adults: risk increases with age.

  • People with weakened immune systems: due to medical conditions or treatments.

  • Anyone with a history of chickenpox: the virus can reactivate at any time.

About the vaccine

The shingles vaccine we provide is given as an injection into the upper arm. It is a two-dose course and offers strong protection against shingles and its complications.

Appointment time: Approx. 15–30 minutes

Side effects

Most side effects are mild and short-lived. Common reactions include:

  • Pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site

  • Headache

  • Muscle aches or tiredness

Serious allergic reactions are rare. If you have a history of severe allergies, please tell the clinician before vaccination.

How to access the vaccine

Allestree Pharmacy offers private shingles vaccination by appointment. We recommend booking both appointments (dose 1 and dose 2) at the time of your first visit to make sure you complete the course.

Who can get the private vaccine: Anyone over the age of 50 and under the age of 80. If you have specific health conditions or are immunosuppressed, please call ahead so we can advise.
